Organic Balcony Gardening is a Possible Planting Solution for Urban Dwellers

Organic balcony gardening is the only option for those who live in the city, especially if you live above other neighbors. Spraying harmful pesticides and fertilizers is always a bad idea as they are harmful to the environment but in the city, there are also other people around to worry about. If you want to grow a garden on your balcony, organic is the best way to go.

Check with your building supervisor

The variety and types of plants you can grow depend on the size of your balcony. You want to make sure not to block any fire exits first. Talk to your building supervisor and check on the weight limit for your balcony and the regulations the building has for gardening. As long as you know all the rules and limitations there should be no problem enjoying your balcony gardening.

It should seem pretty obvious that plants with very deep roots like potatoes are not ideal for balcony gardening. Unfortunately, with the limited space on a balcony, you have to carefully plan what you will grow so that you can maximize the little space you have and keep from weighing the balcony down too much.

Use plenty of creativity

Organic balcony gardening takes a lot of creativity. If you want to grow something like tomatoes or squash on your balcony, check your local pharmacy store or department store for the “as seen on TV’ section. Many have the items that you see advertised on television all the time and sometimes for a better price. You can usually find those hanging baskets that grow the veggie upside down. This is great if you have a roof or overhang over your balcony.

You can plant strawberries

Urban organic gardening is all about getting the most you can out of the space you have. Planting strawberries is one good way to do this. Get a large pot and cut holes around the sides. Plant berries in the holes and you have maximized the space you have, while making sure you get plenty of delicious strawberries. Just be sure that they get enough nutrients. You may want to add something like compost to your soil for extra nutrition for your plants.

Herbs look good and take up little space

Herbs are great for organic balcony gardening. They are nice looking, don’t take up much space, and some of the more aromatic varieties can actually repel certain types of insects. Not only will you have the most delicious meals in your building, but you’ll also have a little bit of greenery right outside your window.

These and many other options can help you get started with your urban organic gardening. Whether you want flowers, veggies, or just some herbs, it is not hard to grow plants on a balcony. Some good sturdy pots and a little potting soil and you’re ready to go.
